Acupuncture Restores Function After Car Accident—A 47-Year-Old Woman Finds Relief
Patient Background
Ms. XX, age 47, was involved in a rear-end car accident that left her with persistent neck and shoulder pain. She experienced restricted neck mobility—especially when turning her head to the right—along with numbness in both hands, more pronounced on the right side. These symptoms severely impacted her daily life, making even simple tasks like housework and brushing her teeth difficult. At night, she was often awakened by tingling and numbness in her hands, further affecting her sleep quality.
Diagnosis
The sudden impact from the accident caused cervical spine injury, leading to nerve compression and a series of neurological symptoms. This condition is commonly seen in post-traumatic cervical dysfunction.
Treatment Approach
Our clinic applied acupuncture therapy focused on relaxing the cervical muscles, promoting blood circulation, and reducing inflammation to relieve nerve compression. Under the ICBC policy in British Columbia, car accident patients are eligible for 12 free acupuncture sessions. We designed a structured treatment plan consisting of 12 consecutive sessions.
Results
After completing the full course of acupuncture treatment, the patient experienced significant improvement:
- Neck mobility was restored, with no more restriction when turning to the right
- Numbness in both hands was greatly reduced, especially on the right side
- Daily activities became manageable again, including household chores and personal care
- Sleep quality improved, with no more nighttime awakenings due to hand numbness
The patient expressed great satisfaction, saying she finally felt like she could return to normal life.
